Sometimes, I love going to the gym. I love lifting some seriously heavy weights, I love the sound of the weights clanging together and I love the feeling of being able to lift my body’s weight off the ground.
And on other days, I almost have to yell at myself to put on my gym gear and walk out the front door.
We all have those days. They’re not the greatest days, but they happen.
Introducing Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE)
Basically, this is the energy you exert when you do any form of movement, from hanging up the laundry to running for your bus. You would never consider them exercises, they were just part of your everyday life, but they expend energy. And those little movements here and there count towards you going into a calorie deficit, which should be your goal if you’re interested in losing weight.
So be mindful every time you do any kind of activity. Here are a few ideas:
If you’re hanging up your clothes, do 5 squats for every two items of clothing you hang up
If you have a set of stairs at home, run or power walk up and down or take them two at a time
If you’re watching TV, do a few bodyweight exercises during the ad breaks. These exercises can be crunches, lunges or push ups (be creative!)
If you’re going to work; if you drive, park further away, if you catch public transport, get off at the stop before, and walk the rest of the way
Keep a smaller water bottle at your desk so you can get up and stretch your legs more often as you head over to the water fountain
On your break, go for a quick walk around the block and use the stairs instead of the lift if you’re based in a higher level at an office building
When you’re brushing your teeth, stand on one leg (this works on your balance and coordination)
The options are endless, and the beauty about this is you get to be as creative as you’d like!
So give these a go, or if there are other little tricks you use to expend more energy during the day, please share them in the comments section! I’d love to hear your go to’s
